DataON: Farewell VMware, Hello-Cloud Ready Infrastructure: Embracing Microsoft Azure Local
Wednesday May 7, 2025 3:30pm - 4:30pm PDT
Many school districts and organizations are concerned about the changes as a result of Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware and are looking for alternatives. In recent months, customers have reported huge price increases, changes in minimum contract lengths, and decreasing satisfaction with support. Analysts suggest that customers should start their technical evaluation of alternatives if they haven’t done so already.

More and more organizations are choosing Microsoft and Azure Local for a hybrid cloud solution that brings the power of Azure Local to on-premises. It provides the benefits and features of the cloud, while still having the options necessary for data sovereignty, compliance, or other issues that mandate on-premises storage of data or operations. And Azure Local enables you to utilize Azure services such as Azure Virtual Desktop, Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure Arc-enabled data services, SQL Managed Instance, and AI at the edge.

DataON has helped school districts such as Cherokee County School District (GA) and Orange County Unified School District (CA) to have the confidence to leave VMware behind and make the switch to Azure Local.

Managed Methods: Proactive Cybersecurity & Safety for Schools: 8 Critical Audits to Protect Your District
Wednesday May 7, 2025 3:30pm - 4:30pm PDT
Your schools rely on online tools for instruction, operations, business management, and everything in between. But, do you know what’s really going on in these systems? Are you sure!?

If you’re like most K12 techs, you don’t have free time on your hands to proactively investigate abnormal or risky online behaviors. Nor do you have the tools that provide you the visibility and control you need to do anything about it. You’re stuck with reacting to incidents after they become a big enough problem to be noticed. Surely, there has to be a better way.

In this popular, interactive session we pull from our experience performing thousands of cybersecurity and safety audits with districts to bring you the top eight investigations that will result in the greatest impact for your district.

These investigations include auditing the 3rd party apps that have access to information in your domain, detecting suspicious login activity that could indicate a compromised account, protecting sensitive personal and financial data from leaks and loss, evaluating URLs that need to be added to your blocked list, investigating student safety risks in school-provided tools and online, and more.

Investigations to audit your online environment don’t have to be complicated or time-intensive. You will learn why these investigations are impactful for the majority of your peers and how to conduct them effectively.

Response to a cyber incident is never a once-size-fits-all event. Districts tune their processes and choices to fit their district's needs and abilities. Most of the districts in Oregon experienced a major third party data breach in December 2024 when the systems of Carruth Compliance Consulting were compromised during a cyber incident. Come hear from three ESD CIOs how each of them engaged their teams in this incident and how they tailored their incident response in a different way from each other yet still coordinated their work. We all know that the role of IT leadership in school districts has changed drastically over the last 20 years. Almost all new initiatives involve technology and new advancements in technology can help improve many things that school districts do. Some school districts don't value the voice of their IT leader as much as other school districts, which has limited their ability to fully leverage technology. This think tank will be a facilitated discussion about how we can individually and collectively advance our profession and voice to benefit the students and staff that we support.

Making Account Creation Slightly Less Painful Using OneRoster!
Thursday May 8, 2025 10:00am - 10:50am PDT
"With all of the applications we're tasked with managing these days, account creation can be a huge time sink. We've turned to the OneRoster standard to make this process (somewhat) easier to navigate, automating account creation for Google Classroom, Renaissance, Powerschool, and scores of other vendor applications.

We'll provide a broad overview of the OneRoster standard and it's capabilities. Next, we'll go into detail on how we use our chosen implementation, Classlink RosterServer, to handle several complex use cases. We'll also cover the largest pitfalls we've encountered and how to avoid them. While our solutions utilize Classlink, similar processes can be implemented in other platforms like Clever, so even if you're not a Classlink customer there is knowledge to gain and share!"

Python Scripting With Google Workspace Apps: Building Workflow Improvements and Automations
Thursday May 8, 2025 10:00am - 10:50am PDT
In this session I'll go over some of the different ways that we use Python scripts (with the gspread library) to leverage Google Workspace tools like Sheets, Forms, and Drive. When used together, you can accomplish quite a lot by improving workflows, building automations, creating data dashboards, and more. We'll discuss some general strategies as well as some of the specific implementations that we (the Peninsula School District) use. If you're from a district looking to start automating or otherwise use Google Workspace apps in your scripting, this could be a good place to start and get some ideas. Or perhaps your district already does similar things - in which case I would love if you could share your use-cases and additional thoughts/suggestions at the end!

Considerations for securing student logins with MFA in Azure and Google environments
Thursday May 8, 2025 3:00pm - 3:50pm PDT
Securing student logins with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is crucial for protecting sensitive educational data. MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring a password as well as a second form of verification. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access, even if passwords are compromised. Compromising student accounts can result in less time applied to learning, loss of personal data, and can have many other serious consequences for student safety and education. Careful consideration into how MFA can be applied to students must be taken in order to successfully protect student information while maintaining accessibility to educational resources. In this panel we will discuss various methods for enabling and enforcing MFA for student logins in Azure and Google.

Don't Panic
Friday May 9, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am PDT
"Budget cuts. Vendors drastically increasing prices. Betting big on technology that doesn't work. Discontinuation of critical software/hardware. Exceeding capacity. Huge piles of grant money have to be spent immediately. Security compromises. Politics. Natural disasters. Crazy mandates. More budget cuts. These are all things we had to deal with 30 years ago. And 25 years ago, and 20 years ago, and 15 years ago.... and these will all probably be ACPE topics 30 years in the future.

Our job is to not panic and figure out how to keep the ship afloat. Discussing how we have done this in past cycles may be therapeutic for those who have been around for a while, instructive to those who are new to this game. Not only have we survived but have often thrived in the face of adversity."

Women in Technology. (Are there still barriers in 2025?)
Friday May 9, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am PDT
I would like to facilitate a Think Tank to speak on the subject of 'Women in Technology' Where women can share their experiences as women in technology. I will have questions prepared to get the ball rolling. If there are barriers, how can we change that? What needs to be done? How can women & men help smash those barriers, if any? How has the technology field changed over the years? We may not see barriers first hand, but we can help those who may still run into them because of their gender. ( 50 minute discussion )

(More) Lessons Learned in Small Town K-12; Rolling with the Punches
Friday May 9, 2025 10:00am - 10:50am PDT
"The (hopefully) much awaited sequel; A lot has changed since our presentation at ACPENW 2024.

All of us in K12 Tech face an onslaught of budgetary constraints, sociopolitical uncertainty, and constant cybersecurity threats. Remaining flexible, adaptable, & optimistic (or at least not cynical) can be a tall order.

Even amidst all the chaos we've completed some massive projects, many at a price of $0.

Having weathered our first years with more than a few scars, we’ve doubled down on our commitment to our principles (& possibly added some new ones). In this presentation we will again discuss what has worked for us, stumbling blocks we encountered (and how we recovered), all from a technological, financial, & philosophic perspective.

…and yes, there will be memes."
